Safety on the Go

Car seat babyFor most of us, our families spend a lot of time on the go. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Car Seats
From that first nervous trip home from the hospital, struggling to buckle our precious cargo into their infant car seat, we spend a lot of time wrestling with our kids’ straps and buckles. As frustrating as those things can be, they are worth it: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71% for infants, and by 54% for toddlers ages 1 to 4 years.

Selecting the right seat for your child’s age and weight is important, as is making sure it is installed properly. Safe Kids Midlands is a great resource for parents in Richland County. They provide regular car seat inspection events and even have a car seat purchase discount program. You should set a good example for your children by buckling up, too, every time you get in the car (even for a short trip).

A few basic guidelines:
Birth to Age 2 – up to 20 lbs. | Rear facing
Age 2 to 4 – 20 to 40 lbs. | Forward facing
Age 4 to 8 – over 40 lbs. 4’9″ and up | Booster Seat
Age 8 to 12 | Back seat, with seat belt

Bicycling is a fun family activity, even for little ones (12 months and older). Once babies reach the age of one year, they can ride in a bicycle child trailer, or on a front- or rear-mounted seat. Many cyclists find that the child trailer provides the most comfortable and stable ride for both rider and passenger.

As your children get older, it is important to get the right size bike for them, and to make sure they always wear a properly-fitted helmet. Things to remember:
Always ride on the right side of the road (with traffic)
Don’t ride at night
Use appropriate hand signals when stopping or turning
